Green movement starts in Jurong today

JURONG residents will start recycling from today, as waste-management company Altvater Jakob takes over trash collection in the area.

Jurong marks the begin-fling of a national effort to get every household involved in recycling.

Waste contractors are now required by the Environment Ministry (ENV) to introduce a scheme to bring waste recycling to the doorstep of residents.

This, the ministry believes, will make it easier for every household to participate in recycling.

Singapore is aiming to recycle 50 per cent of its solid waste in 10 years’ time. It currently recycles 40 per cent, the bulk of which is industrial waste.

ENV and other government agencies, including the Economic Development Board, will also provide funding to develop new and more attractive recycled products.

A ministry spokesman said that ENV is planning to work with building managers of commercial premises to see how waste recycling can be introduced in such buildings.

She added that waste recycling will be an important part of ENV and the Singapore Environment Council’s agenda in their public-education programmes.
