Now, a one-stop firm for waste disposal
Eco, which already handles non-toxic waste, opens a facility for hazardous materials near Tuas plant
A ONE-STOP waste disposal company able to handle everything, from paper and wood to chemical and oil waste, is open for business.
Eco Industrial Environmental Engineering opened its facility for hazardous waste yesterday, not far from its Tuas recovery plant for non-toxic materials, which is being expanded.
Together, the two, which involve a $50 million investment, represent a major boost for the knowledge-based engineering cluster being promoted by the Economic Development Board.
At the opening, EDB managing director Liew Heng San said that last year, the more than 150 companies in the environment technology industry here produced $350 million of products and services.
The Asian market, estimated to be worth $35 billion a year, is expected to resume its annual growth of 10 per cent with the Asian economies rebounding, he said.
This largely untapped regional market provides opportunities in water recycling and desalination, industrial-scale waste recycling and renewable energy.
Mr Liew also praised the four-year-old local company founded by Colonel (Ret)
Chua Tiong Guan. By combining technology and innovation, he said, ECO has distinguished itself as a local company that is poised to join the ranks of world-class companies in this industry.
Eco’s new special waste facility handles solid and liquid wastes from pharmaceutical, chemical and electronic industries, shipyards, refineries and other sectors.
It can treat about 100 tonnes a day at the 2.5 ha site. About half the waste will be incinerated. The rest will be put through physical or chemical treatment to recover such materials as nickel, copper and chromium, and to render the waste safe for disposal.
The firm's incinerator is the largest in Singapore hazardous wastes. It handle up to 50 tonnes.
Eco’s biggest competiton is likely to come from off-shore. Sembawang Utilities and Terminals aims to corner the hazardous waste treatment business of petrochemical and chemical industries on Jurong Island.
