‘Trash’ for funds - for good cause

OLD clothes, electrical items. newspapers and cardboard boxes may seem worthless to some, but they are valuable to others.

About 50 volunteers and youths from the Young Women Muslim Association—Mendaki (YWMA—Mendaki) family— service centre spent yesterday morning collecting such unwanted items.

They went to about 20 blocks around Jurong West Street 52, and gathered about one container-load of newspapers and 47 kg of old clothes, as well as such electrical items as IV sets, fans and video-cassette recorders.

The items will be sold and the proceeds will go to a house-painting project for the underprivileged at the end of this year, said a spokesman for the family-service centre.

The aim of this project is to promote empathy and responsibility towards the underprivileged, said the centre in a press release.

It also hopes to instil inthe participants the importance of recycling in protecting the environment.
