Mitsubishi pact with Environment Ministry

THE Environment Ministry, in its first major commercial i venture, has entered into an agreement with Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation to market its expertise in the design and commissioning of environment projects like Incineration plants outside Singapore.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on Wednesday, setting out the various areas of co-operation, such as joint technical studies, research projects and the conduct of training courses in environmental engineering for management and operational personnel for countries in the region.

The MOU was a result of the trip to Japan last year by Environment Minister Dr Ahmad Mattar who discussed the possibility of collaboration with Mitsubishi officials.

Mitsubishi has been a major supplier of mechanical and electrical equipment for the ministry’s incineration plants.

The ministry’s move into commercial activities marks a new direction in its efforts to establish Singapore as a regional centre for environmental technology transfer.

To facilitate the provision of its services in areas like wastewater treatment, solid waste management and pollution control, the ministry formed a private company ENV Corporation in November last year.

The company’s first order of business involved acquiring a 60 per cent share In Singapore Environmental Management and Engineering Services (SEMES) from Singapore Technologies Industrial Corporation.

In conjunction with the signing of the MOU, SEMES and Mitsubishi also signed a General Agreement on Training to provide for contracts on training of managerial and operational staff of Mitsubishi’s overseas projects.

A ministry spokesman said while the MOU was signed between the ministry and Mitsubishi, the ground level cooperation will take place between SEMES and Mitsubishi.
