JB residents up in arms over rubblish

JOHOR BARU, Fri. — Residents in several housing estates here are up in arms against the Johor Baru Municipal Council for not collecting their garbage for the past five days.
The growing rubbish heaps which attract stray dogs and cats, flies and mosquitoes, have been driving the residents up the wail.
The New Straits Times office here has been besieged with calls from angry residents asking why the garbage trucks are not doing their rounds.
An irate resident from Ta-man Sri Tebrau, who only wanted to be known as Mr Tan, said it was irresponsible of the council not to have foreseen this problem earlier.
"They should have made alternative arrangements to ensure that residents would not have been adversely affected.
"The council is very efficient when it comes to collecting house assessments, but their service is shocking," he said.
He added that during the Chinese New Year, the garbage collectors were punctual, especially since it was time to receive ang-pows from the Chinese residents.
Another resident from Jalan Tarom, Madam Lee Siew Ping, also complained of the growing rubbish dump that was beginning to turn into a "playground" for cats and dogs.
"It is especially embarrassing to have visitors passing by piles of rubbish before reaching your house," she said.
Due to the heavy rain in the evenings, residents have even spotted worms wriggling through the rubbish heap.
"There is so much rubbish from one household that it is impossible to cover the rubbish bins anymore." Residents from Taman Sentosa were not spared either. One of the residents from Jalan Sutera, who wished to be identified only as Mr Wong, said the smell from the rubbish was unbearable.
