Kedah bans opening of forests
BALING, Mon. The State Government has rejected applications to open up forest land for agriculture and mining, fearing such activities may cause adverse effects on the environment, Menteri Besar Tan Sri Os-man Aroff said.
He said the State Government would continue to control activities including agriculture, on forest land and require developers of all major projects to conduct environmental impact assessments.
"We will not hesitate to take action against those found opening up forest reserve areas illegally," he said in his speech read by State Executive Councillor Abdul Rahrnan Ibrahim at the launching of the World Forest Day 1992 State-level celebrations at the Bukit Hijau Recreation Park, near here yesterday.
Osman said the State Government hoped the people would understand the influence of forests on the environment and the adverse affects of uncontrolled deforestation.
"Illegal clearing activities will cause erosion of land and this can pollute the environment."
