Strict terms for developers of Mersing resort
JOHOR BARU, Mon. — The State Government will ensure that the proposed massive redevelopment of Mersing into a major resort town will not endanger the environment.
Menteri Besar Tan Sri Muhyiddn Yassin said today several companies which had submitted proposals to develop the scenic east coast town had been told to make environmental preservation a priority.
Muhyiddin said the State Government would take into account the Environment Impact Assessment of every proposal before approving it.
"The EIA must be submitted along with feasibility studies and proposals for projects," he said after chairing the State privatization meeting here.
Mersing, which largely missed out on the manufacturing boom experienced elsewhere in the State, has been slated for major redevelopment into a resort town following the State Government’s move.
Muhyiddin said the State Government agreed in principle today to a massive billion-ringgit redevelopment plan for Mersing town mooted by a local firm.
He said the project would turn Mersing into a major gateway to the island resorts off Johor’s east coast.
Muhyiddin said Dunlop Estates Bhd has been allowed to conduct a viability study and present a proposal for the project, which in. volved mostly Government land.
Muhyiddin said the company has been give six months to submit a master-plan for the development of Mersing town and land reclamation project along the Mersing river.
He said the company also proposed to:
• Rebuild the present fishermen’s jetty;
• A recreation centre near the riverside; and
• Provide holiday accommodation.
He said the Government will make a decision on the project. He said the redevelopment project may be fully privatized, but the State Government will retain the option to participate through a joint-venture proposal if it wants.
