103,000 S'poreans sign Earth Pledge to say they care

MORE than 100,000 Singaporeans have said "I care" by signing the Earth Pledge.

The pledges, launched to commemorate Earth Day on April 22, will be presented to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, or the Earth Summit, in Brazil this week.

Heads of state and delegates from 170 nations will address issues ranging from poverty to population, from oceans to animals, in an effort to promote sustainable development.

In all, 103,058 pledges were received from the public and 144 organizations such as ministries, statutory boards, non-government organizations and private companies.

The most pledges collected by a single organization came from the Singapore Scouts Association, which collected 8,272 pledges.

Mr Felix Li, the association’s chief commissioner, said: "The time has come when conservation has to become a part of everyone’s daily life.

"With this show of commitment to the environment, we have increased awareness among scouts in Singapore on the importance of protecting the environment."
