Stop US' forestry accusations, urges KL
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia warned Third World nations yesterday to resist the hijacking of the Rio Earth Summit by a United States seeking to turn the meeting into a "forestry finger-pointing exercise".
"President Bush is trying to turn the Earth Summit into a forestry finger-pointing exercise and to divert the attention away from the real issues of environment and development," Primary Industries Minister Lim Keng Yalk said.
"This is an economic war. The North is using such tactics to try to stay on top of this economic war. Malaysia is in the forefront to prevent the US hijacking," he said.
Malaysia, with its rich tropical forests, has been attacked by Western environmentalists for indiscriminate logging, a charge it denies.
Datuk Seri Lim, who will accompany Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad to the summit, said the developing countries must thwart any arm-twisting by the rich nations.
