Hijau singer shows the way for fans

By Malini Dias

SINGER Zainal Abidin, who sings about the environment, showed recently that he practices what he preaches in his songs.

The Hijau singer brought along a Tiffin-carrier to the Naan Corner, Ampang Jaya, for his take-away to support The Star’s campaign, Lend a Hand, Save Earth.

The campaign is to get people to reduce the use of plastics and paper in their daily lives.

"It’s fashionable to be green nowadays. I don’t know if it’s genuine. I hope it is because it’s up to the individual to do something," he said.

Zainal’s particular concern is excessive packaging, especially plastics, that leads to littering.

"When you have so much plastic that you don’t need and can’t use, of course people will throw it away, and most times, all over the place too," he said.

"It was so much better in the old days when paper was used to wrap food. And it was lined with banana leaves, which not only kept the food fresh but gave a nice smell too."

Well, the old ways are mostly gone, but if you are concerned about the environment, you can follow Zainal’s example the next time you decide to get some takeaway.

"It’s not difficult, you can arrange something like keeping a Tiffin-carrier in the office or the car," he said with a smile.

300 events planned.

KUALA LUMPUR: Over 300 environment-linked events will be held in Rio De Janeiro next month concurrently with the Earth Summit.
