More pledges from Malaysians who care

KUALA LUMPUR: Caring Malaysians are sending more Earth Pledges with concrete programmes to do something more for the environment.
Mr Thomas P. V. Thomas, a member of Apex Club in Johor Baru, said the club was willing to help the Department of Environment set up an air quality monitoring station there.
Apex members also pledged to plant 50 seedlings at a place designated by the Johor State Environment Committee, which was under the patronage of Exco member Datuk Jimmy Low Boon Hong.
Malaysians have 10 days from Sunday to make their pledges to show the world that they care for the environment.
The pledges will be relayed by the Prime Minister to the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro next month.
Members of the MIC branch at Taman Daya Pertama in Rawang have pledged to plant more trees on roadside land set aside for the project by the Public Works Department.
Branch secretary S. N. Rajah said the weather had become hotter compared to three years ago as not enough trees were being planted.
Ong Kee Fong, Latifah Mohamed Noor and Mohamed Ghazalli from Kuala Lumpur have pledged to plant more trees around their homes while Tan Mooi Ching from Cheras pledged to fight littering.
Encik Azmi Ismail, a personnel executive from Sato Electronics in Petaling Jaya, has pledged to use unleaded petrol and paper bags as his personal contribution.
Mr Amir A. H. from Kuala Lumpur pledged to continue a personal crusade to encourage his friends to stop smoking.
Malaysian Palm Oil Promotion Council chief executive officer Datuk Murad Hashim pledged to further enhance the campaign to highlight the goodness of palm oil.
Mr Choo Kwei San, 46, a retired solicitor, pledged to educate housing developers to love the earth more and not to be too money-minded.
"The older housing schemes are more in line with Nature than the ones in big cities," he said, adding that Earth Pledge would bring greater awareness among the people.
Students at Taylor’s College have set up The Green Society to promote recycling of items such as newspapers, cans and bottles.
Mr Ted Miles, Taylor’s principal, has pledged to make the college a no-smoking campus.
Datuk Haji Hassan Fuad, president of the Malaysia Youth Council, pledged that its members would plant 1,000 trees by the end of the year.
"The council has set up an environmental committee which will focus on educating the youth," he said.
Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort in Penang said it would get its guests to take part in Earth Pledge.
The World Wildlife Fund for Nature will organize a two-week environmental programme at The Mall starting this Sunday as part of its pledge to enhance society
