KUALA LUMPUR, Sun. —The Larian Hijau has been made an annual event, Science, Technology and Environment Minister Datuk Law Hieng Ding said today.

The run will be held on the first Sunday of January and will form part of the New Year celebrations while promoting environmental awareness. "I hope we will have more participants next year," he said, adding that the crowd would have been bigger this year if not for the long weekend.

Organising chairman Mr Peter Chin Fah Kui said the overwhelming response to the event was a sign that the people supported the Government’s efforts in conserving the environment.

He said he would hold talks with State Executive Council members to enable the Larian Hijau to be held at village, town, district and State levels.

"I hope other States will organise similar runs simultaneously with the one held here from next year," he said.

Chin urged more corporate bodies to come forward to adopt the Larian Hijau as part of their environmental projects.

Other VIPs who participated in the run also gave a thumbs-up for the event.

Chairman of the City Hall environmental sub-committee Mr Lee Lam Thye, who is also the vice-president of Pemadam, said the run helped to create greater awareness among the public about environmental conservation.

He said the event was a good indicator of how city folk responded to environmental awareness programmes.

"This is one of the good ways of inculcating love for the environment among the people. Our sub-committee will be looking into more ways of encouraging people to get involved."

$1.5 mil set aside to improve Templer Park

KUALA LUMPUR, Sun. —The Science, Technology and Environment Ministry will allocate $1.5 million for the maintenance and improvement of facilities at the Templer Park.

The allocation is part of the Ministry’s plan to conserve the area as a park and wildlife reserve, its Minister Datuk Law Hieng Ding said

This allocation will ensure the park remain an attraction for foreign and domestic tourists.

Law said despite the Selangor State Government terminating the park’s status in the Selangor Gazette No. 678 of July 1990, the Ministry still considered it a park and wildlife reserve.

"The State Government has not ocnsulted us as they should. So, we still take it to be in the same capacity as when it was gazetted in 1956. It is required under the Wildlife Act 1972 that the State Government consult the Ministry on any plans to change park status.

"We had sent a letter to the State Government but have yet to get a response.’
