1,000kg 'present' for Mother Earth and future generations
SHAH ALAM, Sun. — The SAL Group of Colleges, Malaysia and Holiday Inn, Shah Alam yesterday handed over 1,000kg of old newspapers for the New Straits Times National Environmental Education Programme.
Holiday Inn Shah Alam resident manager Mazli Mohamed handed over the newspapers to SAL Group of Colleges Board of Governors chairman Rashid Abdul Ghani who collected them on behalf of the NST.
Present at the ceremony were the hotel’s food and beverage manager Allias Mad Zhar, public relations manager Jeannie Tan and NSTP marketing development executive (circulation) Azali Abdol.
The SAL Group of Colleges and Holiday Inn Shah Alam, the seventh hotel to take part, are jointly involved in the campaign.
Mazli said they were happy to take part in the project as its objective was to promote greater awareness on the environment among Malaysians.
He said the hotel had conducted several environment-related competitions such as money plant growing contest and collection of ferns.
Rashid said SAL launched a "Green Project" in support of the Earth Summit’s held in Rio last year.
"We have only one Earth and we must care for the environment for the benefit of future generations."
The college adopted the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve in Kuala Lumpur last year as part of the programme. It plans to plant more trees in the reserve.
In Taiping, Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Selama became the first school in the Larut Matang and Selama district to take part in the programme.
The pupils and staff of the school collected 1,505kg old newspapers within a month.
Its headmaster Ahmad Isa Annuar handed over the newspapers to NST Taiping Branch executive (Circulation) Dzulamarulhilmi Affendi yesterday. Present at the handing over ceremony were D. Maneul and Chuah Ton Huat, who are the school’s senior assistant (co-curriculum) and English Language Society advisor respectively.
