Students collect 4,000kg of old newspapers
ALOR STAR, Mon. —Spurred by the strong awareness to safeguard the environment, students of Sekolah Menengah St Nicholas Convent here collected 4,000kg of old newspapers for recycling.
The effort was initiated by the school’s environmental club while headmistress Miss Mak Sooi Jee and the school’s environmental club adviser Puan Rofeah Hanafi helped to ensure the success of the project.
In a brief ceremony at the school today, Rofeah handed over the old newspapers to New Straits Times Press representative Encik Ishak Muda for the New Straits Times Press national environmental education programme.
Mak said that the school launched the project in the second week of December last year after the students displayed keen interest in preserving the environment.
To encourage the students to collect the newspapers, Mak initiated a competition whereby the class which collected the most amount of newspapers would be rewarded.
Student V. Usha Ruby said the students were very conscious of the environment.
Another student, Dorries Anthony, who is in Form Four, said their parents had been very co-operative in ensuring the success of the project.
"We usually travel by bus to school but ever since this project got started, our parents were understanding enough to take us by car. They wanted to help us take the newspapers to school," she added.
According to Rofeah, this was the first time the school organized such a project.
