A hectic but satisfying task

KUALA LUMPUR, Fri. — It was quite a hectic job, but students of SAL Group of Colleges, Malaysia, were nevertheless proud after being able to collect some 710kg of old newspapers from the Indian High Cornmission here today.

About 50 students, from the School of Information Technology and the School of Accountancy from the Department of American Degree Programme, were particularly glad to be involved in the Newspaper Recycling Campaign.

The collection was in support of the Environment Education Programme of the New Straits Times and the Education Ministry.

Chairman of its Board of Governors Rashid Ghani hoped the students’ efforts would encourage more people to contribute towards preserving a healthy environment.

He said the students had also collected old newspapers from major hotels. They will visit other high commissions and embassies for the same purpose.

Rashid said it was also part of the college’s Green Project launched last June in support of the Earth Summit and Earth Pledge to help keep the environment clean.

SAL’s first environment-related project was the adoption of the Bukit Nanas forest reserve here last year.

He said besides planting more trees, SAL would also maintain the forest museum which had been neglected.

The newspapers were received today by The New Straits Times Press (Malay-sin) Berhad senior manager (circulation) Indra Gunawan Alamshah at the Indian High Commision.
