MINISTRY SEEKS FUNDS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGNS

KUALA LUMPUR: The Science, Technology and Environment Ministry is seeking funds from the private sector to support environmental awareness campaigns.

Minister Datuk Law Hieng Ding said the Trust Account for Environmental Awareness and Education has not had any contribution since it was set up in 1986.

The fund now stands at RM10,000, the money from internal sources.

Computer firm Acenix will contribute RM20 for every personal computer sold. It is the first company to contribute to the fund.

Law said the fund would be used for environmental awareness activities organised by non-governmental organisations such as the conservation and nature groups.

He attributed the lack of support from the private sector to ignorance about the existence of the fund.

"There has been no publicity and people are probably not aware of it," he told reporters after launching Acenix Green It 1993 campaign yesterday.

The firm would also be planting a tree for each of the 6,000 personal computers sold every month.

Law said efforts to create awareness among the public should not be solely shouldered by the Government.
