Environmental law courses to start in July

THE Law Faculty of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) will introduce two undergraduate courses in Environmental Law in July.

"We want to expose these issues to the undergraduates as it has been long overdue," said the Vice Chancellor after receiving 400 books worth RM15,000 from the Asia Foundation on Jan 25.

"We consider these courses long overdue in view of the fast pace of development and urbanisation today," he added.

All the courses were structured based on the demands of the corporate sector and public agencies, he said.

The syllabus for the Environmental Law courses have been formulated to meet local needs but are modelled after British and American modules.

"We desperately need to inculcate environmental awareness into our law students so as to produce lawyers who are sensitive towards environmental issues," the Vice Chancellor added.

The course would be offered as a two-part elective for law students from second year onwards.

"The course will take two semesters or one year to complete and we have not limited the size of enrolment," said deputy dean at UKM law faculty, Puan Noor Aziah Haji Mohd Awal.

The course would look at the various statutes of law by comparison with the American and English models.

The main thrust would be to create a consciousness among law students as to the needs of Malaysian regulations and judicial system to keep pace with industrialisation, she said.

"We want to make the environment complement the economy rather than retard its growth," she said.
