Mass media praised for role in environmental issues

THE Science, Technology and Environment Ministry hopes the mass media will continue with its role of disseminating news on environmental issues effectively.

Department of Environment (DOE) director-general Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Said said no one could question the role played by the mass media in educating the public.

"In 1974, only 300 articles appeared in the newspapers on environmental issues compared to some 30,000 per year today."

The Ministry also provided a library for the public and students to increase their knowledge on environmental issues.

"Our library was opened in 1983 and had a very small number of users then but today, the number had increased greatly. Last year alone, some 2,500 people visited the library," said Abu Bakar said.

The library is located at 12th floor, Wisma Sime Darby.
