Larian Hijau may become national event
KUALA LUMPUR, Wed. —The Science, Technology and Environment Ministry plans to make the annual Larian Hijau a national event.
Its Deputy Minister Peter Chin Fah Kui said State Governments could also organize the event aimed at instilling environmental awareness among Malaysians.
He said if possible, the event would be held simultaneously in all States.
"We will hold discussions with State Executive Councilors who are responsible for environment in April," he told reporters after receiving RM20,000 in cash and goods from the sole distributor for Coleman products in Malaysia, Universal Fitness & Leisure Sdn Bhd.
UFL general manager V. Radha Krishnan handed over the products. Also present was New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd promotions manager Oliver Jackson.
Chin expressed confidence that Larian Hijau would be popular in other States based on the overwhelming response from the public in the federal capital.
The Ministry has received more than 4,000 applications for Larian Hijau and had to reject some since the limit is only 3,500.
Larian Hijau is jointly organized by the Ministry, Federal Territory Amateur Athletic Association, NSTP and System Television (M) Bhd.
The run will be flagged off at Dataran Merdeka by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Azian Shah who will later plant an ornamental shade tree at Taman Tasik Perdana, which is the finishing point.
The run is divided into two categories — "fun run" and "fancy dress".
In the "fun run" category, participants will run to 10 locations to get their cards stamped. Gifts will be given for every stamp collected.
The first 10 to reach the finish line with all 10 stamps will win prizes.
In the "fancy dress" category, which is divided into individual, family and organization/schools sections, participants are required to be in any form of fancy dress.
The run, which is open to those aged eight and above as at Dec 31 last year, covers a distance of six to seven km (fun run) and three km (fancy dress). Each competitor will receive a T-shirt and a certificate of participation.
Sponsors for the run are BP Malaysia, Milo and Coleman. The run will also be televised live by TV3.
