Recycled mental used in Swiss watch casings

METAL from discarded washing machines refrigerators and car rims were used to make the cases of a new range of Swiss watches.

The metal, collected mostly from scrap yards in Switzerland, were smelted into a brass alloy which formed the basic material for the watch case.

Seven tons of scrap metal are needed to yield the basic material for the cases of 100,000 watches.

The watch was launched yesterday to coincide with the Clean and Green Week.

The quartz watches have mercury-free batteries. Mr Geoffroy de Drouas, the managing director of Gemeaux, which distributes the watches, said the company will feed back to its watchmaker a suggestion to use recycled plastic for the straps.
