Lecturer wins award for project on waste water
AFTER four years of intensive research in his laboratory, Mr Gregory Pot’s efforts have paid off. On Wednesday, he was awarded the Preserve Planet Earth Award for 1995 by the Rotary Club of Singapore.
His winning project was to find a way to treat industrial waste water organically, making it less toxic by using micro-organisms found in the environment. Explained Mr Poi, 35: "My father Stephen used to work in a company producing rust-proof coatings for containers. He was asked to look into a way of treating industrial waste but never got to do it because he passed away. Naturally, I decided to take over from him."
The fifth annual Preserve Planet Earth Award is organized by the Rotary Club of Singapore to increase environmental awareness. A research grant of $5,000 sponsored by HongkongBank’s Care for Nature Programme is given annually to fund an outstanding environmental project.
Mr Peyton Coffin, environment committee chairman of the Rotary Club of Singapore, said that Mr Poi’s project was selected because it had "regional and worldwide application".
A biotechnology lecturer at the Singapore Polytechnic, Mr Poi intends to further his research.
