1,000kg of old newspapers from Maxwell School
KUALA LUMPUR, Tues. —
Students from Sekolah Menengah Maxwell in Jalan Tun Ismail can hold their heads high after handing over about 1,000 kilogrammes of old newspapers to the New Straits Times Environmental Education Programme yesterday.
The newspapers were collected from all the school clubs after a three-week long competition.
The school’s 90-member Interact Club, which engages in charity and environmental activities, collected the old papers and arranged for it to be handed over for recycling.
Interclub president Gan Vi Kee said this was not the first time the school had participated in the programme’s newspaper collection drive.
"In 1992 we also turned in about 1,000 kilogrammes of papers," he said.
Teacher advisor Patricia Dass was present to hand over the newspapers to New Straits Times circulation executive Gerald Fernandez.
Half the proceeds from the newspapers’ sale will be used to stock the school’s libraries with NSTs current newspapers while the other half will be given to the school to finance it’s environmental projects.
The National Environmental Education Programme was officially launched by Education Minister Datuk Dr Sulaiman Daud in 1992 to create greater awareness of the environment among students of all ages.
