RRI to study recycling of waste from rubber industry

SEREMBAN, Tues. —

The Primary Industries Ministry has instructed the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia (RRI) to study the possibility of recycling waste generated by rubber and rubber-related factories.

Deputy Minister Tengku Datuk Mahmud Mansor today said the waste was now buried as a means of disposal.

"The volume of waste from rubber factories disposed every year is big.

"As it does not disintegrate in the soil, an alternative way of disposing them must be found," he said.

Speaking after a briefing on the activities of Negri Sembilan/Malacca branch of Malaysian Rubber Exchange and Licencing Board (MRELB) by director Zainal Hamid, Tengku Mahmud said between 17 and 20 tonnes of rubber waste was disposed in each State every month.

"This comes to about 300 tonnes per year," he said, adding that the ministry believed the waste could be put to good use."

The RRI has been asked to look into all possibilities.

Earlier, he said rubber smallholders should refrain from cheating in their efforts to get a high price for their goods. "Some of them have resorted to putting foreign objects into latex and scrap rubber," he said, adding that pebbles had been found in scrap rubber sold to buyers.

He said latex or scrap rubber produced could fetch a better price if they were of high quality.
