Sp'ore, US groups sign environment joint-venture accord
A SINGAPORE group representing companies dealing in environment technologies has signed an agreement with its American counterpart to explore joint-venture opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.
This includes the possibility of providing sewage and waste treatment infrastructure for large industrial park projects such as the Singapore Government’s Suzhou project.
Mr Edwin Khew, who heads the Singapore Association for Environment Companies (Safeco), and Mr John Mizroch, head of the US Environment Export Council, signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday at a ceremony at the Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Safeco’s patron, the former Environment Minister Dr Ahmad Mattar, and the Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy, Mr Emil Skodon, witnessed the ceremony.
This is the third such memorandum Safeco has signed.
The other two are with Australia and Canada.
Mr Khew said that this latest MOU would help to bring US knowhow and technologies together with the market knowledge and project management skills of Singapore companies.
Mr Mizroch estimated that the environmental market in South-east Asia alone is worth about US$6 billion a year (about $8.5 billion).
He thinks that in the next few years the market growth in this region will be almost twice that of other parts of the world.
Singapore will act as the regional gateway for US technologies, he added.
This is the first such venture in Asia for the US trade group.
