Dose plastic burn up with trash?

I REFER to the letter "Say ‘no’ to plastic bags and help save the earth" (ST, March  20) by Jeannie Loh Wei.

I am very concerned about environmental conservation, but living in an apartment means that I need plastic bags to dispose of my garbage

down the refuse chute. Vegetable peelings, fruit skins and damp cat litter are all likely to make their way through paper bags and I do not want to make life harder for garbage collectors, not to mention chute cleaners.

Someone told me that our garbage is incinerated, so the 450-year decomposition of plastic does not apply, unlike in Western countries still using landfills. Is this true? Could someone advise?
