Toys made from recycled materials just as fun to play with
SOME school children demonstrated that a toy oven or a doll house made from cardboard can be as fun to play with as those sold in toy shops.
A carton box of such homemade toys from recycled materials was presented to children of Ang Mo Kb Social Service Centre yesterday.
The bearers of the gifts were six primary school children who had taken part, with 79 other children, in an Earth Day workshop organized by the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) last month.
Besides the doll house and toy oven, the goodies in the box included puppets and stationery holders.
Dr Robert Loh, president of NCSS, who presented the toys to the centre’s chairman, Mr Eric Chan, said the Earth Day workshop teaches children to respect the environment, put recycled materials to good use and to give generously.
Yesterday, the centre was filled with the sound of children’s laughter and happy chatter as they played with their new toys.
Ristina Seah, 12, a Primary 5 student of Mayflower Primary who attends the centre’s after-school-care programme, said: "Now I have more ideas on how to use recycled materials such as paper cups, newspapers, toilet rolls and boxes."
Nur’Izzati Atikab, nine, of Tampines Primary School, who took part in the Earth Day workshop, went home happy. He said: "I made a new friend today. We exchanged telephone numbers and promised to call each other."
