Waste recycling plant may go to Jurong

A SINGAPORE plant that will be converting toxic industrial waste into inert pellets may be sited in Jurong, away from residential areas.

The final product is said to be safe enough to be used as building material when encased in concrete.

Miltox, a Singaporean, Malaysian and Australian joint venture, has applied to the Jurong Town Corporation for a two-hectare site in the industrial estate.

It plans to build a $50-million plant to treat about 15,000 tonnes of waste a year. The sitting of the plant is subject to Environmental Planning Controls.

The Environment Ministry ensures it is sited in a an area compatible with the surrounding land use. lb must also have pollution controls.

At present, Miltox has a small test plant in Jalan Tu kang in Jurong, which handle about 400 kg of waste an hour. The full-scale plant, the company says; can convert 15,000 tonnes o4 waste into about 25,00Q tonnes of pellets a year.

Negotiations between Miltox and possible partners to finance the venture are expected to end soon.

In Singapore, an estimated 40,000 tonnes of toxic waste is produced by companies every year.

This consists mainly of spent acids, alkalis, solvent and heavy metals from the electronics and other manufacturing industries.
